“Size, scope and structure. The Club has everything I was looking for in my career.”

Cher – Assistant Business Department Manager Commingling

“I can sum up why I joined the Club in a single word: potential. There’s simply so much on offer. The depth and breadth of resources here means your ideas get backed and your career gets supported. And as the Club’s influence is so wide-ranging, there are almost limitless opportunities for you to develop and grow.

The size and the scope of the Club had real appeal for me; as did its structure and support. There are different development paths to take and many of them are framed by a formal career programme. Take the Management Trainee route that I’m following. I’m on a well-established, three-year programme with support at every step.

My programme’s rotational, giving me exposure to the different aspect of the Club. Every six months I move on to a new area or team, which means over the three years I deepen my knowledge of the business, build my network and skills and contribute in different ways. Right from the outset, I was playing a part in live projects and handling real responsibilities.

I’m only a year out of the programme, but I’ve packed so much in. I helped manage content creation for the Asian Racing Federation. I oversaw the Federation’s newsletter and collaborated with racing jurisdictions internationally. But probably my most satisfying role was helping to create a vodcast with Fenella Fownes featuring famous Hong Kong jockeys. As well as building my industry network, I got to interview some riding legends, including Matthew Chadwick, Karis Teetan and Zac Purton.

I could see the scope of the Club before I joined, but there have been some real surprises since coming on board. Its international aspect has been an eye-opener. The Club’s influence is far wider than Hong Kong. Our vodcast attracted attention around the world and I’ve enjoyed a few international business trips each year. Having an international dimension to my career wasn’t expected, but it’s only added to my sense of satisfaction.”
