“Building a career is satisfying. Caring for a horse is a joy”
Dereck – Head Lad
“Initially, the Club’s reputation was what attracted me to the role. It has a fantastic standing in equine sports. The Club’s well-known for its high standards and the value it places on professionalism. I like that. I’m also passionate about equine sports and I share that desire to do things properly, to push oneself to be excellent.
Yet while I admired the Club’s reputation, what I loved when I got here were the racehorses. Caring for horses every day is simply a joy. They’re magnificent animals. The closer you get to them, the clearer you see that.
I started as a Stable Assistant and have progressed to Head Lad. This means I help ensure the smooth running of the stables. It’s down to me to provide the best possible care for the horses. Doing that gives me immense satisfaction.
It’s a role with real breadth. I supervise the stable team, co-ordinate exercising the horses and make sure the facilities are in excellent shape. There are always surprises to keep life interesting. Horses are unpredictable and that means I have to be able to handle unexpected events and emergencies. This can be demanding, but I know overcoming these challenges is honing my skills and helping me become a better equine professional.
Of course, the Club’s commitment and record of giving back to the community is truly inspiring. It’s great to be a part of an organisation that has such a big social impact on Hong Kong life. To be able to work with animals while contributing to this social impact is amazing.”
