Gordon – Management Trainee
“Looking back, I can’t believe how much I’ve learned in so short a time. I’ve only been on the Management Trainee for 2 years, but I’ve developed skills in stakeholder management, event planning and project delivery. Some of these have been learnt through tailored workshop training, but many of the qualities I picked up through live projects and taking on particular responsibilities.
Perhaps my most satisfying role so far has been supporting the Prince Mahidol Award Conference in Thailand. The focus was a health-related conference as part of my rotation in the Institute of Philanthropy. I was invited to help plan different events, engage stakeholders and help move the project forward. It was an excellent learning experience engaging with different Thai and Hong Kong NGO/Social Welfare practitioners and leaders has given me a much better insight into their issues and how they work to solve them. I was also directly exposed to senior managers which was invaluable.
Indeed, I was surprised by how much contact with senior managers I’ve had since joining. They’ve been very generous with their time. That’s a priceless gift when you’re just starting out, as shared experience is a short-cut to better performance. The skills and knowledge that often take years to pick up, I’ve had the chance to do it in months.
Personal growth can be very quick here. I’m looking to continue on a fast track after completing the programme. As long as I keep performing and growing professionally, my first team responsibility will be as an Assistant Manager. My focus in my rotation is on Mainland Affairs and I hope to continue supporting and developing racing and philanthropy in the Mainland when I graduate from the programme.
Whichever direction I take, I’ll have the satisfaction of contributing to the social impact of the Club. It makes me proud to work for an organisation that does so much for the community. Some of my family members are beneficiaries of the Club’s Charities Trust. Knowing that I play a part in that through my work gives me great satisfaction.”
