Senior Manager, Public Affairs (Corporate Communications)

Founded in 1884, The Hong Kong Jockey Club (“the Club”) is a world-class racing club that acts continuously for the betterment of our society. The Club has a unique integrated business model, comprising racing and racecourse entertainment, a membership club, responsible sports wagering and lottery, and charities and community contribution. Through this model, the Club generates economic and social value for the community and supports the HKSAR Government in combatting illegal gambling.

 

The Division

The Corporate Affairs (CA) Division strengthens the strategic development and positioning of the Club as a world-class racing club and charity organisation, through engaging key stakeholders in both Hong Kong and the Mainland, and maintaining efficient and effective corporate communications.​​​

 

Job Summary

The job holder provides quality and professional English editorial support to the management. The incumbent will support the management in executing the Club's corporate communications strategy in order to uphold and strengthen the Club's positioning as a world class racing arid charity organisation, and to fulfil its purpose of "acting continuously for the betterment of society" through its unique integrated business model. S/he will collaborate with multiple divisions/departments within the Club.

 

Reporting to the Head of Public Affairs (Corporate & Charities Communications) or his/her delegate, the incumbent manages and provides English language communications support to the Public Affairs team. Major activities include supporting Chairman and CEO communications, including speeches, presentations and written communications; researching, business writing and editing the English language content of the Annual Report; producing written content for a wide variety of other communications including PA managed sections of the Club's website, advertorials and corporate publications, as well as supporting other major Club communications e.g. Sustainability Report, Impact Report. The organisational impact is significant, most especially as it relates to Chairman and CEO communications, but also in terms of ensuring a high standard of public facing communication. An important part of the role is managing direct reports responsible for much of the above - in particular ensuring they meet the requisite standards in terms of timeliness and quality.

 

The Job

  • English language communication support for Chairman and CEO: including speeches, presentations and written communications, with some of the major deliverables each year being the Chairman and CEO statements in the Annual Report, Voting Member presentations and the Annual General Meeting. 
  • Annual Report and Annual General Meeting: as necessary researching, co-ordinating, business writing and editing the English language content of the Annual Report. Writing Annual General Meeting speeches and co-ordinating as necessary with the teams involved, principally Corporate Secretariat. 
  • English language communications support for Public Affairs and other teams: as necessary writing and editing materials, including the PA managed sections of the Club's website, corporate pamphlet, corporate leaflet, advertorials, press releases and other materials. Also supporting other departments preparing key Club documents e.g. the Sustainability report, Impact Report. 
  • People management: Strengthen team spirit and monitor team performance; coach team members to excel and perform; identify training opportunities where necessary; bridge communications between management and team members. 
  • Assist the Department to build and execute effective message strategies and essential corporate narratives for Club Stewards, CEO and management as well as for major charity and corporate projects. 
  • Maintain and establish effective working partnership with aII stakeholders and facilitate effective cross functional collaboration. 
  • Undertake other duties and ad hoc projects as assigned by management 

 

About You

  • A degree level qualification in a relevant subject e.g. English language journalism, English for professional communication, would be indicative of an individual likely to have the requisite qualities.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant business writing experience in a similar communications role in a company or communications agency, and/or possibly with some background in the media.
  • A native speaker level of competence in the English language with strong business writing and storytelling capabilities, but above all a proven ability to write effectively to match the needs of a wide range of corporate communication tasks, especially at senior levels.
