Founded in 1884, The Hong Kong Jockey Club (“the Club”) is a world-class racing club that acts continuously for the betterment of our society. The Club has a unique integrated business model, comprising racing and racecourse entertainment, a membership club, responsible sports wagering and lottery, and charities and community contribution. Through this model, the Club generates economic and social value for the community and supports the HKSAR Government in combatting illegal gambling.

 

 

The Racing Division represents the core part of the racing industry value chain in Hong Kong covering importation, training  operations, racing infrastructure, horse welfare, licensing  integrity, talent attraction  development racedays, marketing, post-racing life and equestrian as well as our international involvements. Mainland development is of equal importance with the opening of Conghua Racecourse and the next stage expansion as well as the recent positive policy directions from the national level as well as the Greater Bay Area (GBA). The team works together to lead the way in transforming racing into a vibrant sporting, social and entertainment experience.

We are currently looking for an experienced Regulatory Veterinarian to fulfill the following duties:

 

 

The job holder reports to the Head of Veterinary Regulation, Welfare and Biosecurity Policy and, in performing their duties, regularly closely interacts with a wide range of people within the Club's Racing Division, as well as with external stakeholders, both nationally and internationally, such as government veterinary authorities, horse racing and affiliated organizations and professional associations.

  • Coach and mentor colleagues within the team and teams we partner with
  • Manage the administration of the independent assessment of horses' suitability to race and train and to ensure the well-being and welfare of horses in Hong Kong and, where necessary, those exported by the Club
  • Liaise and collaborate with the Club's Racing Control Department in developing, implementing and managing the Rules and Instructions of Racing pertaining to veterinary matters
  • Liaise and collaborate with the Club's Racing Laboratory over matters pertaining to the control of prohibited substances in racehorses
  • Liaise with Hong Kong Government and overseas veterinary and horse racing authorities/organizations, over matters pertaining to the import and export of horses, disease control, and related matters.
  • Officiate at horseracing meetings and barrier trials at Hong Kong and Conghua racecourses.
  • Work professionally within the provisions of the HKSAR Veterinary Surgeons Registration Ordinance
  • Develop, set, monitor and regularly review the implementation of equine health programs and quarantine regulations, for all equines in Hong Kong.  Participate in the development and implementation of continuous improvement initiatives to ensure a healthy, disease free, equine population within Hong Kong and the Equine Disease Free Zone in China.
  • Act as an expert witness at inquiries or appeals for Racing Control and supply expert advice on other veterinary and horse welfare matters.
  • Advise and assist with the Club's racehorse retirement program including monitoring and assessing the Club's horses donated to local and overseas establishments to ensure the safeguarding of retired racehorses welfare.
  • Undertake any other duties as and when assigned by management.

  • A keen desire to work in the horse racing veterinary regulation field
  • An ability to establish, maintain and utilize connections with people and organizations, both nationally and internationally
  • A bachelor's degree, or equivalent qualification, in veterinary science as accepted for registration by the Veterinary Surgeons Board of Hong Kong.  A higher degree, or qualification, in an equine related veterinary subject is desirable, though not essential, depending upon previous experience
  • A minimum of 7 years equine veterinary experience, including racehorse clinical practice, with a substantial component of veterinary regulatory work, management and administrative experience.
  • Leadership experience is preferred
