Legal Counsel
Job Summary
The job holder reports to Senior Legal Counsel and is responsible for providing legal advice and support to business units within the Club in respect of their operations and projects, ensuring that the Club’s legal rights and related interests are protected, and that the policies and operations of the Club fully comply with relevant laws and regulations.
The Job
- Provide legal support to business units (BUs) of the Club and its associated companies, in relation to their operations and projects, including drafting and advising on contracts and other legal documents, reviewing and advising on marketing materials and other commercial documents, formulating and updating policies, rules and regulations and guidelines, and advising on legal issues arising from the business operations.
- Providing legal advice and support to the (assigned departments), in particular the (assigned department) on the drafting, reviewing and negotiation of agreements.
- Assist BUs in identifying legal risks and ensuring the Club's legal rights and other interests are fully protected, that the rules and policies of the Club are complied with, and that the Club complies with all relevant aspects of the laws and governing regulations. Partner with BUs to develop sound, structured and practical solutions to mitigate legal and other risks.
- Advise BUs on legal requirements for operational licences and permits, compliance related matters as well as corporate secretarial and governance matters.
- Assist in management of disputes, litigation, disciplinary proceedings, regulatory and other contentious matters and advise on strategies and approaches.
- Monitor legal and regulatory developments in relation to the operations of the Club and its associated companies, analyse legal implications (including any changes necessary to current operations, policies and procedures), and provide updates and trainings on such developments to BUs.
- Manage engagement and performance of external legal counsel, and ensure that high quality, efficient and cost effective external legal service is obtained.
About You
- The job holder should possess a law degree and a post-graduate certificate in law.
- A minimum of 5 years' experience as a qualified Hong Kong solicitor or other common law jurisdictions.
- Solid experience in general corporate / commercial matters and/or dispute resolution / litigation matters gained from an international law firm or in house position in a major corporation.
- Strong commercial acumen with a solution-driven approach
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to provide advice with sensitivity and alertness to wider political and practical issues relating to the Club and its operations
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and able to liaise effectively with internal clients at all levels
- Able to work independently
- Excellent command of English language with the ability to communicate effectively and draft legal documents. Excellent command of Chinese language (Cantonese and Mandarin), with the ability to communicate effectively and draft documents in both languages is an advantage.
- Knowledge and passion in horse racing, football betting and/or sports betting generally is an advantage.
- In depth knowledge of the laws of Hong Kong (and awareness of the relevant laws in the Commonwealth) in particular with regard to general corporate / commercial matters or dispute resolution / litigation matters.
- Solid technical legal skills including legal drafting
- Strong drafting and reporting skills
