Locum Equestrian Veterinary Surgeon

Job Summary

A Veterinarian is a medical professional who provides healthcare services to animals. They diagnose and treat illnesses, injuries, and diseases in various animal species. Veterinarians perform medical examinations, administer vaccinations, prescribe medications, and perform surgical procedures. They also provide preventive care, such as wellness check-ups and dental care. Veterinarians may specialize in areas like small animals, large animals, exotic animals, or specific medical disciplines. They work in veterinary clinics, hospitals, research institutions, or government agencies. In addition to clinical work, veterinarians may also contribute to public health initiatives, animal welfare advocacy, and research related to animal health.

Major Tasks

Provision of High Quality Veterinary Clinical Services

Provide high quality veterinary clinical services to racehorses at the Shatin Racecourse and, when rostered, at the Conghua Racecourse to ensure racehorses are healthy and able to contribute to the racing product through:

  • Adhering to routine Club horse health policies and procedures.
  • Achieving prompt and accurate diagnosis and recording of veterinary conditions in horses presented by trainers.
  • Achieving prompt diagnosis and reporting of veterinary conditions in horses referred for clinical investigation.
  • Implementing systems to monitor the veterinary condition of horses to ensure they are presented to race in good health.
  • Implementing strategies to prevent injury and disease and ensuring management plans and treatments are followed.
  • Updating clinical findings and management plans into the VMIS for compliance with Club regulatory requirements.
  • Communicating with trainers and staff to maximize compliance with treatment regimens.
  • Writing professional veterinary reports that comply with service quality standards.
  • Being aware of equine infectious diseases and participating in the Club's disease outbreak management protocols.
  • Providing optimum service for importing and exporting horses.
  • Assessing the veterinary condition of retired horses.
  • Providing emergency veterinary services for barrier trials at both racecourses.

Avoid Incidents Compromising Racing Integrity

  • Adhering strictly to protocols on handling drugs and prohibited items.
  • Providing trainers with advice on safe medication use, including withdrawal periods and risk reduction.
  • Reporting clinical findings and treatments relevant to horse safety and racing integrity.
  • Recommending retirement of horses for veterinary reasons when appropriate.
  • Following standard operating procedures in the public domain.

Contribution to High Clinical Standards

  • Staying updated with equine veterinary science to improve Club services.
  • Reviewing current clinical practices to apply new knowledge and skills.
  • Discussing cases with colleagues to enhance clinical management and teamwork.
  • Managing specific projects and areas of departmental management.
  • Using DVCS facilities and equipment correctly and applying due diligence.
  • Identifying factors that may compromise horse health and welfare and instigating investigations.

Maintain Safe Work Practices

  • Keeping up to date with safety protocols published by DVCS and HKJC.
  • Taking a proactive approach to implementing safety practices.

Race-Day Veterinary Injury and Incident Management

  • Responding promptly and professionally to accidents, administering first-aid appropriately.
  • Collecting post-race blood samples under supervision for prohibited substance analysis.
  • Performing post-mortem examinations according to DVCS protocols to determine causes of incidents.

Professional Advice to Owners and Trainers

  • Performing insurance examinations and responding to insurance enquiries.
  • Performing detailed presale examinations on Club's international sale horses.
  • Reviewing veterinary reports and providing relevant advice to owners.

Financial Performance Contribution

Contribute to the financial performance of the Department by ensuring diligent adherence to DVCS policies and procedures regarding consumables and maintaining accurate records in the VMIS database.

Other Duties and Projects

Undertake any other duties and projects assigned by the supervisor.

Education

A primary degree in Veterinary Science from a university that is recognised by the Board of Veterinary Surgeons of Hong Kong together with relevant post graduate qualifications and proven experience in Thoroughbred racehorse veterinary practice, and an interest in research.

Qualifications

Experience

  • A mininum of 3 years in equine clinical practice.
  • Clinical experience and confidence in dealing with Thoroughbred racehorses and trainers.
