Job Summary
The Biobank Technical Officer supports the daily operation of the EWRF Equine Biobank through the provision of technical, administrative and operational support. The role is responsible for ensuring the accurate handling, processing, storage, documentation and tracking of biological samples and associated data, while maintaining compliance with established quality standards and biobanking best practices.
The position contributes to the effective delivery of biobank services to internal and external stakeholders, supporting equine research initiatives that advance equine health and welfare. The role requires close collaboration with veterinary, laboratory, research and operational teams to ensure efficient biobank operations and continuous improvement of procedures and systems.
The Job
- Support biobank core operations including sample receipt, labeling, processing, storage, transportation, inventory control and disposition according to approved procedures and quality standards.
- Maintain accurate sample and associated metadata records within the Biobank Information Management System (BIMS) or other designated databases.
- Support implementation and maintenance of the biobank quality management, ensuring compliance with applicable standards, policies and procedures.
- Assist in coordinating sample logistics and liaise with internal departments, veterinary teams, laboratories, researchers and external partners to facilitate biobank services.
- Assist in developing standard operating procedures and relevant operational documentation.
- Support routine administrative activities including procurement, inventory management, service documentation, record retention and billing processes.
- Monitor consumables, equipment and storage inventory and coordinate maintenance, servicing and replenishment activities.
- Contribute to biobank projects, process improvement initiatives and other duties assigned to support the Foundation's objectives.
About You
- Bachelor's degree or above in Biotechnology, Biomedical Science, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or related life science discipline.
- Minimum two years of relevant laboratory, biomedical research, biobank or biological sample management experience.
- Experience in biological sample handling, laboratory operations or research support activities.
- Experience working under quality systems such as ISO 9001, ISO 17025 or ISO 20387 is desirable.
- Experience supporting data management systems, LIMS or BIMS is an advantage.
- Biological sample handling, processing and storage.
- Sample inventory management and record keeping.
- Data entry and management using computerized databases.
- Understanding of quality management systems and document control.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Strong documentation and record management skills.
- Good spoken and written English and Chinese (Cantonese and/or Mandarin).
