Deputy Executive Manager, Sustainability

Founded in 1884, The Hong Kong Jockey Club (“the Club”) is a world-class racing club that acts continuously for the betterment of our society. The Club has a unique integrated business model, comprising racing and racecourse entertainment, a membership club, responsible sports wagering and lottery, and charities and community contribution. Through this model, the Club generates economic and social value for the community and supports the HKSAR Government in combatting illegal gambling.

The Division

The Charities and Community (C&C) Division manages strategic planning, grant donations, impactful project initiation, community engagement, and the day-to-day operations of the HKJC Charities Trust. C&C works with the Government, NGOs, and community partners to proactively identify root causes of social issues and address them through innovative approaches and cross-sectoral collaboration.

The Department

This team develops and ensures the implementation of Club-wide environmental-related strategies, policies, and programs across key divisions and operations in both Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland to: (1) build the environmental-related governance processes and systems needed to meet the long-term sustainability-related and Club-wide organizational goals; (2) be the expert resource for environmental-related issues and regulatory compliance; (3) support the Club on all environmental-related issues, target setting and performance monitoring; (4) through emerging megatrend monitoring and analysis, identify and reduce operational risk; and (5) contribute to developing new sustainable business opportunities.

They also advocate for environmental-related matters with external stakeholders, strengthening the collaborative culture of Club-wide Sustainability (CwS) to support divisions and operations in striving for best global practice, supporting all other sustainability-related functions within the CwS team, as well as developing and mentoring a succession pipeline for the continuation of the professional environmental capabilities of the CwS team.

The Job

  • Lead the development of the environmental-related governance processes and systems needed to meet the long-term sustainability-related and Club-wide organizational goals.
  • Lead all environmental-related target setting and performance monitoring and reporting across the Club, through collaboration with and support of all relevant internal stakeholders.
  • Lead the development and management of the core environmental strategies and relevant programmes to be applied across the Club, including but not limited to: climate change, waste, water, resource use and biodiversity.
  • Ensure environmental information, data and performance alignment with the industry standard for environmental-related communications and calculation methods for performance aligned to key industry standards including but not limited to: CDP, GRI, IFRS, and TNFD.
  • Oversight of all Club-wide environmental performance data, ensuring robustness, consistency and completeness.
  • Oversight of Club-wide internal communications and capacity building for all environmental-related matters.        
  • Oversight of Club-wide external reporting and communications of environmental strategies, performance and activities.       
  • Steer the regular monitoring and analysis of environmental-related emerging megatrends to support the identification and reduction of operational risk and integrating the output under the broader Enterprise Risk management (ERM).
  • Facilitate the contribution of the analysis of environmental-related emerging megatrends to support the identification of new potential sustainable environmental solutions for continual environmental performance improvement, as well as other potential sustainable business opportunities.
  • Act as an in-house expert resource for environmental-related issues and regulatory compliance for both Hong Kong and Mainland operations across the Club.
  • Participate and contribute positively to create a diverse and inclusive culture with trust and respect.  Play an active role to support cross-team/division/department efforts and model collaborative behaviours. Establish and maintain communication and transparency by driving working groups, monitoring the progress of environmental strategies and performance, and maintaining good internal and external relationships.

About You

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, or related discipline and relevant qualifications demonstrating a mature understanding of implementing sustainability programs in a large for-profit organisation.
  • Relevant environmental professional qualifications such as being a professional member (or above) of the Hong Kong Institute of Qualified Environmental Professionals (HKIQEP).
  • Minimum 20 years of experience in the field of environmental sustainability, process improvement, corporate sustainability or other areas relevant to the post.
  • Technical knowledge of and experienced in developing and implementing environmental strategies and programs.
  • Practical knowledge of environmental-related legislation and statutory obligations that affect the provision and delivery of Club operations and services.
  • Capable to set up systems to assess and monitor, as well as advise on the mitigation and prevention of negative environmental aspects and impacts of operational activities.
  • Knowledge of Hong Kong and China government services and environmental consultancy services.
  • Track record of engaging company boards and senior management on financial material Sustainability issues.
  • Have existing relationships with environmental organizations in China and Hong Kong.
  • Proven ability to scope and manage technical environmental consultants.
  • Experienced in executive engagement and in building high-performance teams.
  • Excellent planning, organization, and project management skills.
  • Analyse information and data in a manner that highlights key issues and root causes.
  • High level of proficiency in written and spoken English and Mandarin.
