Statistical Research Manager (Financial Crime Risk Investigations)

The Division

The Security, Integrity and Information Security (SIIS) Division is responsible for the Club’s integrity by combatting criminality, corruption, and information security risks, including cyber security that may impact business. Through robust governance and proactive security measures, SIIS is dedicated to maintaining a secure environment and upholding uncompromising integrity across Club operations.

Job Summary

The holder of the role is responsible for supporting the analysis of customers and associated betting transactions to assess and identify financial crime risks to racing, football and the Club from criminality through betting market manipulation.

 

The Job

  • Investigation betting transactions:
    • Conduct due diligence and data analysis on customers and their associated betting transactions to assess whether the Club’s betting accounts or services are being used as part of a professional betting syndicate or illegal betting operation and/or for other financial crime risk related purposes.
  • Identify risk:
    • Identify any FCR and/or other risk, including concerns related to Responsible Gambling Policy, Staff betting and any stipulated legal requirements to protect the integrity of the Club’s businesses.
  • Prepare Suspicious Transaction Reports (STR):
    • When financial crime risks are identified, prepare Suspicious Transaction Reports and investigation reports for management and other key stakeholders. Ensure that the reports prepared by the team provide clear and logical narrative and recommendations for risk mitigation.
  • MI preparation:
    • Assist in the MI preparation related to betting analysis for management review. Logically and concisely present the betting behaviour or trend of customers or that may represent FCR to the Club.
  • Continuous development of risk identification:
    • Support the continuous review and enhancement of existing approaches to flagging customers who present FCR or, operate as syndicates.
  • Lead projects:
    • Independently lead projects designed to further help the Club identify, understand and mitigate FCR. Identify solutions or develop scenarios which aim to improve the efficacy, efficiency and accuracy of identifying FCR in HKJC betting accounts. Examples include development of criminal typologies and understanding risk exposure posed by different betting channels or services offered by the Club.
  • Others:
    • Undertake other duties assigned by the supervisor

About You

  • A bachelor’s degree in a quantitative discipline (e.g., Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science) or other relevant tertiary education.
  • Professional certification in AML or compliance (e.g., ACAMS, CAMS, ICA International Diploma) is preferred.
  • Minimum 5–8 years of experience in a dynamic, data-driven environment, with at least 4 years in AML, compliance, or statistical analysis.
  • Programming skills are required, with a preference for SQL and Python.
  • Proven experience in delivering projects involving data analysis and generating actionable insights or recommendations based on findings. Ability to collaborate with stakeholders to translate analytical results into practical business solutions.
  • Advanced analytical and investigative skills, with the ability to interpret complex data sets and identify patterns, trends, and anomalies.
  • Proven capability to translate analytical findings into clear, actionable insights and recommendations.
  • Strong report writing and presentation skills, including the ability to prepare well-structured reports and deliver findings effectively to stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in MS Office tools and experience with statistical or data science tools (e.g., R, SQL, Python, Databricks).
  • Knowledge of AML regulations, typologies, and risk assessment methodologies.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines while maintaining accuracy and quality.
  • Solid understanding of betting business operations, bet types, and products is essential.
  • Chinese written and spoken skills are an advantage
